The National Safety Council Urges Lawmakers to Ban All Mobile Phone Use While Driving

Even though 2009 brought more restrictions and bans on cell phone use while driving from several states, the National Safety Council wants more. It has conducted research that shows just how dangerous cell phone use actually is.

  • Drivers that talk on their cell phones are 4 times more likely to get into an accident
  • Approximately 100 million people, possibly more use cell phones while driving
  • 6 percent of auto accidents are caused by cell phone distraction
  • Hands-free cell phone devices did not significantly reduce the number of accidents

Being safe and not using your cell phone whether it is to text or talk, saves not just money but lives. One group estimated that 2,600 people die every year in auto accident related to cell phone use. Your auto insurance premiums can rise significantly with one traffic ticket for cell phone use while driving, if it is outlawed in your state. Auto insurance companies are well aware of what cell phone use means, it means you're a large risk and your auto insurance premiums will be adjusted accordingly.
