State Not Required to Pay Auto Insurance Premiums of Foster Children

In California, there are about 7,000 children in the foster care system. Foster children are sent to new homes due to abandonment, neglect, abuse or other reasons preventing the parents from taking care of their child.

The state of California pays anywhere from $446 to $627 a month to foster parents for the purpose of supporting the foster children in their care. Foster parents have been petitioning the state to dispense additional funds to cover auto insurance premiums. However, the state of California has limited foster care funding, and with the California budget crisis, cannot afford to cover the auto insurance premiums of a 16 or 17 year old foster child.

The California Supreme Court ruling passed down on January 22, 2009 relieved the state of any financial obligation to provide additional money for auto insurance premiums.
