North Dakota May Double Minimum Liability Auto Insurance Requirements

North Dakota's lawmakers are mulling over a bill that is designed to raise the minimum auto insurance liability requirements for its motorists.

The current auto insurance liability requirements are set at 25/50/25, which is $25,000 of personal injury liability coverage for one person, $50,000 for all people injured in a single accident and $25,000 for property damage for each accident. The new legislation would require all motorists to have $50,000 in auto insurance liability for one person, $100,000 for all persons injured and $50,000 in property damage liability auto insurance coverage.

Proponents of the bill say the current auto insurance liability limits are too low and do not provide adequate auto insurance protection. Opponents of the North Dakota bill say that it may increase the number of uninsured drivers in the state.
