No Auto Insurance, Why is that?
Have you ever been pulled over and not been able to produce your auto insurance papers? Yes, it can be a very awkward situation.
Many drivers probably question in the first place why they need auto insurance when they get behind the wheel. The reasoning is quite simple..... It's the law in most places.
Except for a few places here and there, drivers must have auto insurance to drive and need to be able to produce it when asked by a peace officer.
So why then, do many people look dumbfounded when they get pulled over and can't produce their auto insurance paperwork?
There could be a number of reasons. Among them can be: Forgetting to renew their policy; Not having enough money to renew the policy; and Feeling they don't need it because their car has depreciated in value.
No Auto Insurance, no license, etc.
If you fall into any of the above categories, put your butt in gear and get moving.
The alternative is about as pretty as an IRS audit. Yes, it is not pretty.
Wonder what can happen to you without auto insurance..... Well: First, for those caught without auto insurance, expect to pay a fine. While where you reside will determine the amount of the fine, expect it to be hefty. Don't forget that a judge will also saddle you with court costs, while you could also be responsible for a civil penalty in order to reacquire your license. Second, you will likely have your license confiscated. Potentially, you could lose your license for up to a year. You may also be required to retake a written test prior to getting back a license, so let that scare you into making sure you're properly insured. Finally, ever wanted to see the inside of a prison cell? Driving without auto insurance could land you a prison term of up to five years to go along with the fine and loss of license.
No Auto Insurance Means Higher Costs
If all of this hasn't scared you, note that your auto insurance rates are likely to increase if caught driving without coverage, making it harder to carry insurance in the first place.
Even if you just get pulled over while driving without auto insurance, think of the ramifications if you're driving without coverage and you get into an accident.
When in an accident without auto insurance, hope that you are not injured, as you could be saddled with the medical costs.
Damage a person's car and/or injure them, and you could be taken to court to pay for damages.
